UK Phantoms AOA gauge/indexer

Hi all,

I have seen several pics of the fit of the angle-of-attack gauge and indexer (donut thing) on F-4K and Ms. The gauge is on the left of the gunsight glass or just below attached to the radar repeater, and the indexer is on a little box on the right of the glass. See here.

However I have heard that in the original flight manuals they do not appear. Does anyone know the history of the placement of AOA indicators in UK F-4 cockpits?

Thanks.

A picture tells a thousand words… but it’s a little difficult to read the legend!

Is this giving the following timeline for the FG.1:

(1) The indicator was fitted to the panel mid-left,
(2) The indexer was fitted to somewhere above the gunsight glass (or is it either side of the glass?) [1 & 2 the initial fit?]
(3) The indicator was moved to the left of the glass and the indexer to the right, and
(4) The indicator was moved to the left of the radar?

And if so, do we know the dates of these changes?

Sorry for the detailed questions.

See diagrams from the Phantom Air Data Computer manual. Any help?

Quote – ‘Do you know if they were fitted in the spots I mention?’

They were indeed fitted as you describe.

Many thanks. Do you know if they were fitted in the spots I mention? I don’t have a copy of the APs or aircrew notes.

They were fitted as standard on all F4K/M aircraft from new.

AP101B-901-15A (for FG1) AP101B-902-15A (for FGR2) Part 1 Chapter 2 refers.
