Pacific Aviation Museum visit 23/01/12

Here are some photos I took on a recent museum visit, it is on the other side of the world to most people so thought you may like to see what they have. The photo with the hangar windows is showing bullet holes from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as the museum is located on Ford Island at the very epicentre of that day. Only one cockpit section present but I think it could be a little large for anyone to take to cockpitfest! I was also lucky enough to be standing around when the museum took delivery of their latest exhibit, a Marine sea Stallion. The Zero, Wildcat and Kittyhawk are airworthy but they don’t fly them. I was also very impressed with the staff, there was 2 people on the front ticket desk, a WW2 pilot guiding people in and out of the theatre, about 4 or 5 people taking visitors around on free tours and explaining the exhibits, 2 people in the simulator section, 3 staff in the gift shop and there was a cafe with at least 3 visible staff members. Well done to everyone involved here.

All the best
Paul

The control tower is coming on nicely, they have replaced a lot of internal steel and completely repainted the outside, the buildings at its base are next on the agenda.

Some very nice shots from a great and very friendly museum. They’ve come a long way in a short time since opening a few years ago. Good catch with the CH-53 arrival.

How is the restoration of the control tower progressing?

The Zero is not really ‘airworthy’, it is a Bob Diemart ‘restoration’ and was grounded by the CAF some years back due to a multitude of issues with its structural integrity.

Here are some non aviation photos, I highly recommend the ‘Battle Stations Tour’ available on the USS Missouri. The only other military related places I went to was the US Army Museum at Waikiki and the old observation posts on top of Diamond Head.

Great! Looking forward to the photos! Did you go driving up country to any of the air bases? I know Kaneohe has some gate guards and Barber’s Point has a museum.

Hello nuuumannn

Yes I went to the USS Arizona, USS Missouri and USS Bowfin as well, will post some photos when I get a chance tomorrow, it was a really good day. The rest of Hawaii was not too bad either!

Cheers Paul

Excellent pics,. My wife and I were going to go to Hawaii for my birthday last year, but missed out; moved house etc (going to see Roger Waters in concert instead!! :)), so nice to see the museum’s collection. Definitely a must over the next few years. Did you go to the Missouri etc? Any pics from around the harbour of any interesting things you saw?
