Hi , I’ve become a member of this forum to seek knowledge about the recovery of Corsair from the African river.
My grandfather was George ‘Jock’ Halliday who was one of the engineers sent down from Egypt to recover the aircraft after the aborted first attempt at flying her off.
I have discovered some references to my grandfather in the British Airways archive at Hatton cross and some interesting memories from some of the people who were there when I visited.
I have found some scanned articles on the internet by googling the event.
My grandfather was awarded an MBE for his part in the recovery.
I would love to find out more because my children may never have the chance to discuss this with anybody who was alive at the time, when they become interested in family history. I wish I had been more aware of this when my father was alive.
My grandfather worked for Imperial airways in Africa and I believe had a part in setting up the base in Durben. My father was born in Cairo and raised in Durban due to my grandfathers work.
Thanks in advance for any information you are abe to provide, point me at.
I bought the book Corsairville in the hope there would be more detail but was a little dissapointed when there wasn’t.

Hi,
Thanks for the posts.
I managed to find a copy of the book through an on line charity book shop.
Any further information would be very much appreciated.

Graeme, my Corsair article in Aviation History is now scheduled for publication in the March 2013 issue. I still have your Bracknell address pinned on my corkboard and will have them send you an issue when it’s published.

Corsair crash
Graeme…..interesting to read your story and the replies.Dont know if i can help much re your grandfather but i have a family involvement. My father was the
flight Radio Officer onboard and much of the research and info that Phil Simms did for his book came from my Dad.I have photos that my Dad took of the crash and i have his logbooks. Some of these photos were in the book Distant Empires. The British airways Heritage section at Waterside may be able to help. They have the original file and paperwork from the incident as i have seen it….very interesting story.
