1949 Farnborough – New home movie footage

Here’s a link to some recently transferred to digital home movie film of an early post-war Farnborough.

Starts with flying shots of the HP Hermes V airliner which is larger than the Viscount which is also shown in taxi between those opening flying shots. Then the good old Bristol Freighter, then the Viscount and the Hermes again. Then after the Bristol lands, it shows an Airspeed Ambassador reversing, as a Shorts Solent flying boat passes overhead. Then a Balliol T2 trainer takes off, followed by the one I’m not sure of,.. an early Percival Pembrooke or its predecessor(?). Then the lovely Vickers Seagull, followed by the fabulous tri rotor Cierva Air Horse powered by a Merlin! Then the Westland Wyvern TF2 naval aircraft and finally the unusual fin of the Armstrong Apollo.

Well worth a visit.

Great link. Wyvern TF.2, possibly VP113 looked superb, shame we couldn’t hear it too. Also the first time i’ve seen the Seagull ASR flying / moving… brilliant!

Plus Hawks and Typhoons……… Oh, yes, and the odd RV……..!!!!

Planemike

I think the Hawk line at Brough is closed, and the Typhoon contribution is airframe parts. We also make some F35 parts.

Amazing to think that once upon a time we made whole aeroplanes, and quite a lot of them too.

Now our whole aerospace industry makes Airbus wings, some missiles, and…….er….that’s it. 🙁

Don’t forget Rolls Royce engines!….It’s all still a very big business and now presumably makes money….better to be hooked up to a Franco-German determination to stay in manufacturing than the short-term view of successive British Governments

btw the Bristol 170 looked unusually fast and the AW Apollo raher slow….clockwork movie camera? 🙂

Many thanks Moggy for posting that link. I was there and remember the beautiful Wyvern, a year or two later to be flying low over my home all day long in groups of three, all from RNAS Ford. Plus the Apollo which one could see with binocs at Boscombe Down from Countess Hill.

Great bit of old film 😎

Lovely period colour but a worrying plume of smoke on the horizon in one shot.

I noticed that too, maybe it was “take 2” for the Wyvern display http://www.mocgb.net/forums/images/smilies/yahoo/17.gif

Lovely period colour but a worrying plume of smoke on the horizon in one shot.

It reminded me of when one of the Navy Seahawks display team dropped out of formation and dove straight in to the hard standing at Blackbushe. Headline story the next day and a successful ejection for the pilot.

As a small boy living close to Eastleigh I remember seeing the Air Horse flying a few times….what the Farnborough footage fails to show is that it was BIG…really BIG….and noisy.
