Does anyone have, or know where to find, photos of the very first Duxford airshow?
As a 4 year-old my family roped me in to help prep the airfield for the show. I have vivid memories of long long weekends sweeping thick layers of dust in the hangars. Soul destroying doesn’t describe it! I can also remember being placed in the ‘cockpit’/fuselage of Magister G-AKPF during the show.
Unfortunately, my father didn’t take any photos at the time and I’ve had no joy trying to unearth some. If anyone has any knocking about or know where I could find some, I’d really appreciate it.

In 1973 I was a very recently – recruited Halton apprentice and I was at Duxford in uniform on that day. Although I served 12 years and ended up a Chf Tech working on Lightnings, I have very few photos from my service days.
If anybody has any photos showing the apprentices at Duxford that day, I’d be pleased to see them

Just stumbled back on this thread and want to say thanks to G-ORDY for the photo of Magister G-AKPF at the 1973 Duxford show. That’s exactly how i remember it on the day and for a large chunk of my childhood. For the record, the EAAS attempted restoration took place in a large shed in a back garden in Steeple Morden, not Bassingbourn, for much of the 1970s.
Willip26 – all I can say is lucky you!!!

G-AKPF
I was fortunate enough to be Adrian Brook’s first passenger in G-AKPF on 22nd July 1990 after he finished the rebuild and it was initially flown in civilian silver colours, as depicted in the photo of the fuselage in front of the Shoreham Airport terminal building. The other Shoreham photo shows him running up the engine before one of its early flights as V1075 and it was in this guise that I had my second flight in the Maggie on 1st September 1990.
We then shared a lot of other flights in it, visiting several events including a PFA Rally at Wroughton, Moth Club fly-in at Woburn, Great Warbirds display at West Malling and a Brooklands Museum fly-in, where the other photo with the Vanguard as a backdrop was taken, before it was eventually sold to Hairymouse.
Good to know that it is still giving a lot of pleasure to its current owner.

Do we need a “Duxford in the 70’s” thread … or is there one already going?

Just testing David 🙂

[QUOTE=G-ORDY;2075905]So here are the b&w shots that I took on the day …
Looks like a D.H.88 Comet fuselage ….

That has to be the rebuild of Magister / Hawk Trainer G-AKPF. This airframe had been a composite since rebuild in 1955, and moved on to Bassingbourn for completion. It is, of course, now in the custody of Peter Holloway as ‘N3788’, and hopefully should feature in next Sunday’s airshow.

Any more complaints?

What did they use? Water paints? Looks awfully wishy washy

Didn’t the other one end up at Flixton?

I remember there being two Javelins at DX, one of which wore grey/green upper surface camouflage.

Isn’t that exactly what they did do with the Javelin some years back (minus the thin orange striping and A&AEE logo on the nose)?
Exactly my thought….

Wish they’d restore that Javelin in those markings, probably the best colour scheme ever worn by a Jav. Bet when it’s time comes they stick a boring camo job on it 🙁
Any idea if that comet racer is black magic?
I think the Javelin HAS been restored in those colours!

So here are the b&w shots that I took on the day …
DH Dove G-ALFU (with rudder from G-ALFT)
CASA 352 – or maybe an Amiot AAC 1 – i/d not known
Spitfire F.Vc AR501 – still in film markings from “The Battle of Britain”
Looks like a D.H.88 Comet fuselage ….
Shorts 184, 8359, damaged fuselage section … what’s the other cockpit section in the adjacent bay?
Fuselage section from Rudolph Hess’ Messerschmitt Bf 110
That’s all folks!
Anyone else got anything to add?

With the 40th Anniversary show coming up on Sunday I thought I’d resurrect this thread.
The Javelin was very definitely there on 14 October 1973 …
The P-51D had been newly restored as a static exhibit and was parked outside …
Those were the only colour slides that I took (expensive!) but I have some b&w negs that I will scan and add …

Joyful days. I had the pleasure of attending for the first time in 1976 [we melted in the heat]. I flew in from Malaysia for the event which was a big deal in those days. A thousand beers at the Red Lion with BBMF guys and a wonderful display on the Monday morning when they departed…:)

Thanks very much to QuePee for digging those out so quickly.
What I’m looking for above all is a photo of the EAAS Magister G-AKPF fuselage displayed in a hangar on its only outing in 20 years. It’s also the only thing I can remember that day (apart from the CIBA-GEIGY stand on the other side of the hangar!).
Below is another extract from the programme with the scantest of details about it.

Thanks for the info. I feared she may have met the same fate as some of the other late Anson retirements and landed up with a scrappie particularly as she looked pretty forlorn when I last saw her at Old Warden.
