I have always been of the understanding the BP Defiant was underpowered and not very manoeuvrable making it easy prey for the Luftwaffe fighters during daytime hence the reason it was switched to the night fighting role.
Several days ago I was reading a book in which there was a large feature about the difiant and as you can see in the attachment it says ‘the Defiant scored time and again in a turning dogfight and the Spitfire not once’.
Why did the Defiant perform so badly in WW2 if it was (apparently) at least comparable with the Spitfire?
