I would say it’s a B17 turret hatch as Rich suggests.
If G.Adlam measures across the widest span (against the bottom ring) of the opening in his turret, and then Auster can confim by measuring across the widest part of his glazed panel, this will be confirmed.
As turrets go the Bristol 17 isnt that rare, being used in large numbers post-war on Lincolns and Shackletons, they were the last mid uppers in RAF use.
There was only one Sherpa built, and as it’s preserved with its windscreen I wouldn’t think there’s any others kicking about!
Rich, how’s the plans going re ‘op turret’?

Bottom edge of that piece is curved, the one in the OP is not.

“How the Ell could you match that to such a rare turret?”
‘Cause I’ve been looking at how to bolt one of those turrets onto a Shackleton.

Wow!!!!! I knew the forum wouldn’t fail, thanks gents, the level of knowledge on here is truly unbelievable. How the Ell could you match that to such a rare turret? My guess was some sort of Canberra nose camera cover.
My mates uncle brought it decades ago to make a tractor windscreen with.

I think you`ve got it Richw, the pins and catches look like they`d fit…maybe graham can measure the missing section to confirm.
Which bit do you want measured?

I bet… that its the back half of a Bristol B.17.
Look at the rest of one on Graham’s site, 3/4 of the way down the page.

Yes Anon, with you there, the `catch` looks like it may locate around a slewing ring.

Turret?
That’s the direction I was thinking, Hindenburg.
There looks to be a quick release catch at the bottom corner(s). Did any of the later gun turrets have a section like this for easier escape in case of emergency.
Certainly some of the war time turret gunners had the odds stacked against them when a rapid exit was required and this may have been the result?
Anon.
