Battle of Britain Bunker

During WW2 the RAF succeeded in their struggle to maintain control of the airspace of the UK during 1940 in the fight known as the Battle of Britain. It may be of interest to many aviation enthusiasts to know that the Operations Room where the main battle was controlled is now a museum and open to visits from the interested groups and the general public.

It is located at the 11 Group Operations Room in RAF Uxbridge (known as the Battle of Britain Bunker). Although RAF Uxbridge has now closed, the original bunker, with its map showing the air movements over SE England during the battle is still in place along with the ‘Tote’ board showing the Group Controller which Squadron resources were available at the Fighter Command stations in his area. It is a monument to RAF history and well worth visiting. The museum spaces in the Bunker also have an extensive collection of memorabilia from the period.

Visits must be arranged by prior appointment – they are free, but visitors are invited to make a small donation to the upkeep of the collection.
