I see that there is a lot of coverage of the Spitfire on TV today.
Emotion aside, it seems to me that the Mk 1a, while aesthetically pleasing, was not really superior to the ME109E. I know the Spitfire did a nifty turn but if basic performance was comparable can we really compare a fighter armed with machine guns with one armed with cannon ? I do not pretend to be an expert and would welcome the observations of those who are.

I think a German pilot in a 109 with Spanish Civil War experience against a sprog Spitfire pilot is a no-hoper, then a Hurricane ace against a sprog 109 pilot might be similar
So in other words there was little to chose between the aircraft!!
If the search function worked better on the forum it might help search for some of the interesting debates of past times 😎
However, I feel that I should apologise to the OP in that my initial response was somewhat less than thoughtful to a new forumite. Sorry Clio.

You’ll need to scroll down a bit in the second link to find some more comparisons.

This has been done to death many times on here and the general opinion seems to have been there was little to chose between the two and the overriding factors in success in combat were tactics and support.
Hi Clio – you go ahead and ask what you want. Some people don’t appreciate that there are new forumites joining all the time, and some have similar interests. I personally will never tire of the Spitfire v Me109 debate, something new might pop up from time to time. Free speech and all that, I’m sure the Few don’t mind us regurgitating old debates and discussions. I know that one or two would encourage it, so we never forget.
So, ask away!:D I think a German pilot in a 109 with Spanish Civil War experience against a sprog Spitfire pilot is a no-hoper, then a Hurricane ace against a sprog 109 pilot might be similar. A good friend, now deceased, told me that he ‘turned for my life one afternoon, round and round, until the yellow-nosed ****** dropped out of the turn in a stall. I dropped my nose and ran like hell for Mummy, nearly diving into the drink in the process’.
Personally, I would have preferred to be in a Spitfire. Sqn Ldr Paul Day dropped himself into the cockpit of a 109 and his first words were: ‘Good Lord!’.;)
