Spitfire Shootdown Footage Query

I have just paused the most excellent documentary ‘Spitfire! Two Seconds to Kill’

to ask:

Is the Spitfire shootdown footage at 20.34 staged? I’ve always thought the clip to be suspect because of the conveniently placed iconic white cliffs and the mid-wing roundels.

Did the Spitfire sport mid-wing roundels? I’ve never seen it reproduced on repro colour schemes.

Thanks for any replies.

Without wishing to divert the forum from a fascinating discussion of catered room accomodation in the Wirral area :diablo:, I’m pretty certain that a while back someone posted some photos of this aircraft and the mighty minds of the forum managed to identify the area above which they were taken as being near the coast of northern Germany – though I can’t remember whether it was on the North Sea or Baltic coasts.

Unfortunately, even if the search facility wasn’t broken, I’m not sure how to find it, given the ubiquitousness of Spitfires round here! Anyone else remember it?

Thanks chaps 🙂 I wonder where they acquired the cliffs from?…

After watching the film, I came across an 11 minute 1960s TV interview with Douglas Bader.

For those amoung our enthsiastic band who havn’t seen him talk candidly about Reach For The Sky, his disability, and more, this is a treasure trove. I think the questions bring out the real man behind the legend, no matter what side of the fence you sit on.

Yes, I thought that the Spitfire with mid wing roundels was a captured aircraft used for propaganda photos….it appears coded G*X in the colour(ised?) frontispiece photo of the latest edition of The Most Dangerous Enemy by Stephen Bungay, closely pursued by a 109. And it’s probably the Spitfire that rapidly overtakes an He111, and is filmed from the nose gunners position in a frequently seen sequence.

Not in the RAF – that footage is generally considered to have been staged by the oppositions ‘Ministry of Propoganda’ with a captured Spitfire – the give-away being the roundels as you point out. Presumably the original roundels were so convincingly blanked out when it was first obtained they could not figure out where to re-apply them for the ‘shoot down’ filming!
