109 redig in Winchelsea

To round off a good weekend following a trip to France for the forthcoming ‘Dig WW2’ TV series Lt Stassers 109 was re-excavated, unfortunately a section of fencing at about 4ft gave misleading detector readings. However it was worthwhile due to the discovery of Strassers oxygen mask left behind when he baled out on 1st September 1940. A mass balance weight, primer pump handle, intact instrument and other odds and ends meant we left wet but reasonably happy, sustained by excellent chips just up the road in Rye on the way back.
