I’d always assumed that (in the UK at least) transport gliders were withdrawn from use more or less at the end of WWII, but I’ve recently read that the Horsa was not finally taken out of service until 1949, and the Hamilcar in the “mid-fifties.” Must have been quite an anachronism by then, and I was wondering why we kept them so long and when did other countries finally abandon the idea of glider assaults?
