It’s those fighter pilots from Winston’s speech, isn’t it?
Well, maybe not.
Following on from an earlier discussion on his blog, my friend Brett Holman’s posted an interesting item on the surrounding text of Churchill’s speech, and it’s interesting on the lack of fighter-pilot emphasis. Brett’s PhD thesis related to the fear of the bomber, and it’s worth remembering that pre-war the important military aircraft was the bomber as threat or opportunity for attack. The fighter boy glory thing was magnified to obscure the rest of military aviation as the war progressed.
Anyway, interesting post here: http://airminded.org/2011/08/31/on-the-few/
