Hi All
My Uncle was KIA in Halifax JB918, I would be grateful for anymore information or ORBs with his name or A/C in. Here is what I know already, it’s a bit raw being mainly from my aunts records:
Frederick George Harris flew a Halifax Bomber group 102 the number was JB918 call sign DY-T. His plane was shot down on the 26/27 April 1943 at 04:20. His RAF number is 1291074 Sgt at one point, he was also an RAF voulenteer reserve at one point.
Shot down by Georg Kraft 12 NJG.3 on the night of April 26th 1943 Zuiderzee 04:29. Location 448 2H5 in See: 3900m
His personal effects contained £46 2/2d
On the 14th Sept 1943 his mother got a letter from his Sqn Leader saying he was presumed dead (RAF Pocklington, Yorkshire)
His crew were: W/O2 J.G.Grainger, Sgt F.G.Harris, Sgt W.A.Willis, Sgt H.Beck, Sgt W.Foley, Sgt K.Oatridge
His body was never found but Sgt Graingers was later
Flt. Engr Sgt Frederick G. Harris and W/Op Sgt William A. Willis have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial while Navigator Sgt Kenneth Oatridge, Air Bomber Sgt William Foley and Air Gnr. Sgt Howard Beck all rests in Texel Cemetery in Holland..
Fred died at the age of 20 years old, 26-27/04/43 – 102 Sqn – Ruhr – Shot Down. Crashed at Noordzee, off Texel – Eierlandse gronden.
Other Info:
In a letter to his Mum he describes his training AACU, there were Lysanders and Wellingtons and Henleys. He thanked her for cigarettes and sent her 10/-. He said that he was very busy. His address was:
AC1 Harris F
J Flight 1AACU
RAF Bodorgan
Anglesey
June 5th 1941
Some of it isn’t directly about his loss but may be helpful for earlier stuff!
Cheers
James
