Well if Duxford’s reason for not having a Nimrod is hangar space then where are they going to put a Hercules ?
I’m wondering if that is why they want rid of the Shackleton?

I would love to see a C130 back in the sand/stone “middle eastern” scheme!

An important question should be raised today and hopefully with suitable planning important aircraft can be saved. Not all C-130’s are the same, of the ten remaining old generation C-130K’s XV196 and XV200 deserve special mention. According to the excellent BARG Falklands Air War, XV196 was one of the first C-130s to be fitted with extra internal fuel tanks to allow ultra long range flights, before the inflight refuelling mods took place. On 7th May 1982 XV196 was flown from Assension Island by a 47sqn (special forces) crew to meet HMS Plymouth in the South Atlantic, although the planned air drop was aborted the flight lasted 18 hours. The mission was repeated on the 8th May and sucessfull air drops to HMS Plymouth, HMS Irishman and HMS Yorkshireman carried out again with a 17 hour flight time. Three more long range flights were made before XV196 returned to UK on the 16th May for fitment of inflight refuelling
XV196 was also the subject of the Airfix model kit. Furthermore, I’m all for preserving the ‘oldest’ example of each type and that makes ‘196 favourite for Cosford imo.

Also deserving of preservation is XV200, which was the first inflight refuelling conversion, work was completed in just ten days by Marshalls of Cambridge and XV200 was delivered to Assension Islands on 14th May. On 16th May a 47 sqn crew flew a 6300 mile sortie 23hour 45minute flight with six in flight refuels from Victors to deliver 1000 lbs of stores and eight paratroops to HMS Antelope, for which the pilot received an AFC and the rest of the crew Queens Commendations.

Lucky Duxford and Cosford will take one each, at least we will have an AFRES Air force Reserve in the UK:D:D
All they need now is ANG sqns to support Britains misery:diablo:

I have been told one is going to Cosford at the end of the year no idea which.
Better hurry. It might not be there by the end of the year. Nice to think of all those countless billions we send abroad isnt it?

Does anyone know what, if any, plans are in the pipeline for preservation of some of the older C-130’s? After decades of service it would be a great shame not have a few of the older K’s in preservation.

bruntingthorpe is not a knackers yard – we do try to save as much as possible
By: AlanR - 1st August 2011 at 15:51
You mean something like this?….
Closest to the camera is XV186
Ah yes. There used to be some interesting aircraft in the hangars at Marshalls.
Mostly ex-RAF aircraft on their way out to middle eastern countries. The
Strikemasters for instance.
As well as the Ambassadors, flying race horses in.
I remember a Lloyd aviation (?) DC-7 landing on three engines, which had just flown from South Africa. One of the engineers saying it usually comes in on three. He said, last week it came in with all four running, and went off the end of the runway. 🙂
Must get to Bruntingthorpe one day

Resmoroh
And…………..
By: stendec7 - 1st August 2011 at 15:15
nah! they wont be scrapped, they will take all the good bits off the old aircraft and keep them, then put all the bads bits together from other aircraft so that they can fly. then they will sell them on to some 3rd world country. probably!!!!
What, like the UK yo mean?
By: pistonrob - 30th July 2011 at 18:52
Seems a bit sensible to me 🙂 Surely they (goverment) would rather pay somebody to destroy them, than sell them to make some money back 🙂
ha ha true. you can tell i dont work for the goverment lol. although i did spend 3 years at Lyneham as a painter and finisher and spent my days (working permanant nights) in the haunted C2 hanger. i`ll post some pics soon but only of the hercules and not any ghosts lol
