Third Vickers Wellington survivor, will we ever see it?

Hi all,
A bit of a pet subject of mine.
It has been several times discussed on this forum but I thought a dedicated thread would be in order.

In the UK there are enough parts surviving to reconstruct a third complete Vickers Wellingon.

At Brooklands there is a complete forward fuselage on display next to R-for-Robert, at East Kirkby a full set of wings is nailed against a wall, a tailsection (formerly at Moreton-in-the-Marsh) survives as well and many other seperate parts. And not to forget Mark Evans has a large part of a Mk IV Wellington fuselage structure.

I know it would be difficult to get all parties to cooperate, but could it be done in the current climate, now that seemingly impossible projects emerge in numbers (see Spitifre Mk I thread). What mark would it be and what identity should it carry (purists to form an orderly line:cool:).

Cheers

Cees

It is a great idea, but keep in mind that the extra forward fuselage at Brooklands is not a complete fuselage. It is a walk-trough exhibit that does contain some parts, but AFAIK it is mostly the top half. Also, to go from some sections of fuselage and a set of wings to a complete aircraft is still quite a challenge. But I won’t deny that it would be nice to have another Wellington!

L7775 really needs to come back together doesn’t it. I have a Wellington throttlebox which may have originated from L7775. If the parts ever did come back together I would be happy to make it available

It would be nice to have a Wellington permanently on display, complete, north of Watford.

Not the best of photos but it gives an idea of the rest of L7775 which was recovered –

…and I can see the section I saw on Waun Rydd in the Brecon Beacons last weekend – to the left of the photo, where the spar curves. Thank you, I was trying to place it!

Re the post two above.

Wellington …….Unless Barnes Wallis designed the Hampden as well.

Was at Flixton in Suffolk last week. There are substantial Wellington remains there as well

There are Wellington wings at East Kirkby, from a crash site in Scotland. Apart from a little fire damage to one, they are in astonishing condition for something that smacked into a hillside, then sat there for fifty plus years.

I think there are wings at East Kirkby. But they could be Hampden. Saw them in the 90s.

So to rejuvenate this thread, how complete would the ‘third’ Wellington be if these known sections were combined? Would there be much to fabricate?

re;

surely what is important is to pay respect to the hours of volunteer time, to a project that is after all a memorial. In years to come if somebody wants to know what a/c their Grandfather flew or worked on, and what it is like to sit in it, who cares if its built from several a/c or new parts? Personally I would love to see LV907 in the dark in winter, with the sound of engines roaring away in the distance. I still remember one of my 1st airshows being told that much as a Stirling would be nice there were none left let alone the chance of having one in the flying program!

A perfect example is the disabled lad who wanted to sit in a Lanc but couldnt get over the main spar. Hence the replica cockpit did a perfect job – although why he could not have sat in Old Fred who knows. You can imagiane somebody standing there going “its not a real a/c you know”. Besides replicas can take wear and tear that could not possibly be inflicted on priceless exhibits. Can you imagiane kids (and adults) having a whale of a time with the controls of a real Vickers Vimy!!!

Yes, but doesn’t this discussion revolve around creating a Wellington from known remains?

The Skysport built Wallace was rebuilt from the Cranwell remains.

Let’s not forget Jet Age’s wonderful Gloster Gamecock.

And the Me262 or Fw190 were not exactly extinct before the new-build versions!

So, has a completely extinct type ever beeen resurrected from scratch?

What about the new build ME 262 and Fw190 s ???
….still not a bomber though……………….

Simply put, there is a market for “sexy” fighters, not so much for a multi-engine types.
