"Prototype Spitfire Prop" That Was NOT On Ebay

Spit propeller? – No Way!

That is not any kind of Spitfire propeller – let alone one from the prototype.

For a start it is too small and the blades are not fabriced, as a high-power prop’s blades would be.

It is from a First World War (or just post WW1) aircraft and the details of the engine it would have been fitted to should be embossed on the side of the hub. It looks like it is from an engine in the 200 h.p. class, which is way too low a power even for the Merlin I/II.

Apparently it originated from the Mitchell family. That fact doesn’t make it a Spitfire prop. The Mitchell family today wouldn’t have any more idea than the average punter what it was off.

The only Supermarine Schneider racer with a two-bladed wooden prop was the Sea Lion in 1919. Looks to be bigger then the one in the museum
