The story is incredible…. Brief details as follows;
After being shot down Flt Lt Miller DFC (Pilot) was last to leave the Lancaster. As he bailed out it exploded and he woke up hanging upside down in a tree by his Parachute.
He then “civilianised” his clothing, including removing the tops of his escape boots (the shoe parts of which he kept and i now have). During his “Evasion” he stole a German Solders bike from outside an Inn and spent time on his journey doing as much damage as he could to German communications (telephone wires etc). He joined the French resistance for period and caused so much mahem, a bounty was put on his head by Klaus Barbie (The Butcher of Lyon). He eventually crossed the Alps (on foot) and was interned in Switzerland. He finished the war on Spitfires with 614 Squadron.
One amazing thing was a Telegram he sent to his Mother whilst on the run, it read ” Been shot down but ok. Can you collect my Bike and Camera from Squadron.
He sadly died about 6 years ago. A truely remarkable story and remarkable man.
