A trip was required over to Sywell today (cheers Ben) and i took the opportunity to visit the museum there. Fantastic array of artifacts and display material.. a real aladdin’s cave and well worth a visit in my opinion. And its alot bigger than i thought too.! My meagre photos really don’t do it justice.
Then whilst having lunch on the pilots mess restaurant balcony which overlooks the airfield, i got talking to Paul and Sarah Ford who operate their superb Fokker Triplane replica from there. Paul was kind enough to show me round this cracking little fighter, so many thanks go to him for giving up some of his time for me. Incidentally Paul is looking for some extra sponsorship for his Fokker Triplane, details of which can be found on the http://www.jastabinksaviation.com website.

Think I PM’d you with his email address – drop him a line – he has just done something with Duxford’s oral history department

Hi TT
Just caught up with this one. Does Mr Sturgeon wish to join our little group – would you be in a position to ask?
Cheers,
Matt

oops – sorry I missed the thread Rob!
The Whirly is 1/32nd entirely scratchbuilt by Glen Ping for F/L Doug Sturgeon – an honorary member of the Museum and my friend.
He was pre war RAF – an Armourer on 19 sqn at DX in 1938 – then trained as a pilot at Sywell (twice!) went on to Whirlies with 263 at Warmwell, then Typhoons, Mossies then Hornets, leaving the RAF in the late 50s. He is a top bloke and this is a model of his machine…
Glad you enjoyed it Rob and thanks for putting up the pics – sorry I missed you
All the best
Ben

Your welcome Paul. I’m hoping fellow forumite TEXANTOMCAT will be along at some point to answer any questions, as he will be able to tell you much more than me.

You beat me to it Cees – absolutely stunning.
Thanks for sharing your photos with us Wyvernfan. Any chance on knowing the story behind this particular build of the Whirlwind – it’s almost like the person who built it had a specific reason for doing so.

Not sure Cees, 1/32 or 1/48 i would guess… but its a real beauty with even scale tools laying on the wings.

Wow nice Whirlwind model, what scale?
