What's the difference Avro Manchester Mk1, Mk1a, Mk1b

Hi,

what’s the difference between the three?
Is it just the extra tail fin or is there more (externally).
Trying to convert a Mk1a to a Mk1 (model).

Thanks,

H.

Manchester Mk I – Initial aircraft had F.N.21A turret, later Botha type. Central fin and small type fin and rudder. 28 ft span tailplane. First ten airframes had flat type bomb bay doors as prototype.

MK Ia – 21st airframe and subsequent. Central fin removed and large type fin and rudder. 33 ft span tailplane.

Further development was instigated. Napier were sent an airframe to test fit Sabre engines but was never completed. Designated Mk IIa. Bristol Centaurus engines were also installed but never test flown. designated Mk IIb.

Both Manchester Mk I and Mk Ia were produced by Planet. Price can cause marital disharmony.

Apart from the deletion of the third fin I believe the span of the tailplane was increased as well and was used on the Lancaster too.

Are you referring to Planet Models 1/72 scale perhaps? Mine is 1/48.

Go for it as the Manchester is a nice looking aircraft.

How about chopping up a surplus Lancaster to recreate a Manchester?

Ohoh:eek:

I would like to have a crack but not very skilled at scratchbuilding.
I may try a Hercules engine Lanc maybe.

Mark 1 = Optimism

Mark 1a = Realisation

Mark 1b = Desperation?

What you have there is a mark 1a.
Am I right in thinking the only difference is the third tail fin?
I’m converting a Polish Resin Kit of the Manchester 1a (brand name escapes me).

Here’s mine,

I converted a Tamiya Grand Slam Lancaster into Manchester I A L7518. The remains of which we recovered in 2000.

The engine nacelles were made from Miliput.

What model conversion are you using.

As far as I’m aware, there was never a Mk.1b. The Mk.1a had the twin fins and a horizontal tailplane of increased span (same as Lancaster).

A quick Wiki gives alot of useful info…
