Bob Stanford Tuck's Lucky Penny

Does anyone know where Bob Stanford Tuck’s lucky penny is today?

This was the one in his pocket hit by a German bullet over Dunkirk during May 1940.

Also, does anyone know of a photo of it? I seem to recall one at the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in, I think, a Sunday newspaper colour supplement – perhaps the Sunday Observer??

Thanks for that information.

I do not believe that the collector who acquired his Log Book has the penny. I was only talking to him yesterday and he didn’t mention the penny. But I will go back and ask!

I know that he was photographed with it in 1965.

Michael Tuck confirms the family does remember the penny, however its whereabouts are unknown. They have vague rcollections of it going to a private collector, possibly the same person who acquired Tuck’s original logbook. For the record, Tuck (sadly) sold off a number of personal war-related items later in life, including his decorations.

Cheers.

Hi friends. This question regarding The Penny is something I meant to ask the Tucks during our meeting, but neglected to do (probably something to do with the surreal experience of being in the home of one of my hero’s children).

Anyway, have sent a letter to Michael with the question and will let you know what he says. I’m curious about it myself. Would be great if by some chance it’s still around and we could use it as a prop in the film!

Funnily enough I only read about this lucky penny over the weekend in a book that mentioned it during his time as a POW; presumably he was allowed to keep it by the Germans during his captivity?

Andy, no photo, unfortunately, but from ‘Fly For Your Life, by Larry Forrester, “Once a bullet had struck his thigh, rattling the loose change in his pocket and stoving a 1921 penny into the shape of a spoonhead.(He still carries this souvenir among his daily supply of coins, sometimes toys with it during conversation.)(March 1956) I too would be interested in it’s whereabouts today: doubt if the above were still true post- decimalisation days, perhaps he had it mounted on a ring with his car keys? 😎
