Baxterley Great Little Air Show

Unfortunately Aeroplane Monthly quoted the date of the Baxterley Great Little Air Show as 25th June, when in fact it is the 26th, so please do not turn up to see the Balliol cockpit on the Saturday, but the Sunday, when you will see one of the friendliest little air shows it’s possible to see, a real old time treat.

A very good show, with a varied line up. The only downside for me was the commentator, who clearly had the best of intentions, but just didn’t seem to know when to give it a rest and let the aircraft do the talking.

Great value at £12 and well done to all who organised the event and took part.

Flower bombing would indeed be difficult, unless the petals blew off. The guys (and gal) at Baxterley were only missing by 50 metres with the flour bags. Ken was the poorest shot, but then it was his Shogun he was aiming at.

Might I add thanks to No.1444 (Brownhills) ATC Squadron, who were about the most polite, hard-working and efficient I have ever come across.

I tried flower bombing, with a very small bag of flour, from our club’s Auster at the strip at Meppershall back in the 1980’s. The bag missed the airfield, but came close to hitting a car travelling on the road alongside the strip…ooops…:D

Once more visitors to the Show enjoyed considerable heat, which was alright for those who did not have to sit in a Shogun on the runway being flour-bombed by the Jackeroos, Queen Bee and a Tiger. With hindsight, we could have left the windows open, as they weren’t very good shots !

Could be worse…

wondered who was sitting in the Shogun, bet your glad they were not that good a shot yesterday, they are usually better than that!

Got to say that this is a great little show, one guy i got talking to had even come up from the south coast, 170 miles one way! Surprised no photos yet especially as i recognised a couple of Duxford refugees

‘Considerable heat ‘ – therein lies the clue.

Big (ish) aeroplane, smallish strip, hottest day of the year, degraded performance. It sounds as though the pilot made all the right decisions.

The Anson had a starter problem, but Air Atlantique sent the Rapide instead, though the pilot would not land, which is a shame, because with twelve Tiger Moths, a Gipsy Moth, Fox Moth, Queen Bee, and the World’s entire population of Jackeroos, it was a bit of a Mothfest on the ground. Once more visitors to the Show enjoyed considerable heat, which was alright for those who did not have to sit in a Shogun on the runway being flour-bombed by the Jackeroos, Queen Bee and a Tiger. With hindsight, we could have left the windows open, as they weren’t very good shots !

Sadly, the Anson didn’t make it. Announcer just said “technical issues” had prevented it attending.

Was there when the Hurricane came in, you’ve also got the up or down hill runway and the interesting bump!

See you tom

It’s very tight, trees on each side, and a dog-leg, but they landed a Hurricane there at the last Air Show. The beauty of Baxterley is that you are very close to the action. The weather promises to be great, and I’m just off there now, to help push Tiger Moths out of the hangars.
