Finally got round to reading Martin Caidin’s book ‘Ghosts of the Air’ and was curious that I could not confirm the above accident. The aircraft was suppose to have been built at the end of the war as a C-69 and then foreign registered as ‘AHEM-4’ (?) There were incidents of a mechanic being killed by a propeller and a pilot dying at the controls over the Atlantic. Then on 9th July, 1949, the aircraft crashed near Chicago, Illinois and all were killed. Without being able to confirm that this accident occurred, this would bring into question the veracity of some ‘ghost’ stories. Anybody know more? 🙂

G-AHEM was a BOAC Connie?
Indeed it was, a Model 049E (c/n 1978) Fleet name Balmoral. Sold to Capital Airlines June 55 as N2735A.

It was, but seems to have become N2735A with Capital Airlines and crashed in late 1959, http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19590512-0
