Geoffrey Alexander Percival Gamon

Geoffrey Alexander Percival Gamon was one of 3 Cheshire born brothers involved with aviation. The Marlborough College Register shows that he was born on 9 Jan. 1902, and that he was a pilot with Imperial Airways who was killed in an aeroplane accident at Cairo on 24 Oct. 1934. There is a stained glass window in his memory in Chester Cathedral.

However, this site: http://www.planecrashinfo.com/Airline/AL%20H-I.htm
does not show any Imperial aircraft accidents in 1934.

Also, in the House of Commons on 10 Dec 1937 the Under Secretary of State for Air reported that Imperial Airways aircraft were not involved in any serious accidents in 1934.

If all of the above is correct it seems to suggest that although he was killed as a result of an aero accident there was no aircraft damaged!

Can anyone tell me anything about his death?

The joker in the pack of information about Geoffrey Alexander Percival Gamon
is that the Kenya Gazette of 1925, 1926 and 1930 shows him to be with the Kenya Police!

David

Paul,

“Born 9 Jan. 1902, a Pilot with Imperial Airways flying out of London who was killed in an aeroplane accident at Cairo on 24 Oct. 1934” (Marlborough College Register)

He was too young to have served in WWI.

I admit I made a Gamon mi-Steak on that – The G.P. Gamon referenced might be an uncle? Gilbert Percival Gamon born 1871

But I am also sure Marlborough College not correct in all details..

I can only find 1 Geoffrey Gamon born for reflevant date (1902)

From London Gazette

Mr. Geoffrey Percival Gamon, of the Kaleyards Works, Steel Casement Maker, Chester,

Now running another company and being a pilot of another may not be impossible.. But I am not yet convinced in this case especially as you show in in Kenya in the later 1920s…..

was he killed as a result of a flying accident or an accident involving an aircraft? ie walking into a propeller. from things ive read in the past these type of accidents when recorded are still recorded as an aircraft accident..

Looking at the text on the window, it only said:
“Accidentally killed in Cairo Oct 24, 1934”

Thanks flyernzl. The possibility that he was flying another aircraft – I should have thought of that but didnt!

Not sure about a web search for an accident in Cairo in 1934. A search on his name does not produce any additional information.

Possibility that, although employed by Imperial Airways, he was flying some other (private?) aircraft when the accident occurred.

How about a search for non-airline accidents on that day?
