Hi,
I am trying to pin down an incident that took place at Old Bassing near Bassingstoke some time in the summer of 42 or 43.
The eye witness states it was a Typhoon but I can find nothing that tallies up. The aircraft concerned hit trees and flopped into the field and caught fire, people tried to free the pilot but tragically the pilot lost his life in the intense fire. I found a parachute buckle so have confirmed it is British but very little else remains apart from molten metal which doesn’t tell us very much.
I would really like to pin this down as it is some what of a local mystery.
I have been told that the Pilot was Canadian??
Can anyone solve this lost incident?

Details on the pilot’s Death Certificate might be specific as to place of death, or else the burial records where he is buried. Sometimes the location is much more precise than just a parish – although even that might help you.

Hi Andy, that could fit, does it give any further detail on location? Or cause of accident? This one was next to the railway line and not far from Odiham. I guessed you were flat out with Shoreham. Will prob see you there anyway, looks to be a good one.

The only Typhoon I have that might fit is EK439, lost near Odiham on 24 August 1944 with Flt Lt P W Lear killed. However, he does not appear to be Canadian and the year is wrong!
PS – sorry been unable to get across to see you yet. Probably now has to be post-Shoreham as I’m pretty busy with that.
