Hawk XX282, 1983?

Hi all

I guess this counts as Historic, being 28 years ago…feel free to move it if it’s not 🙂

Can anyone tell me if XX282 was used by Red Arrows in the early 1980s? I have a photo of a Red Arrows Hawk labelled as XX282, taken in (or before) March 1983. The serial isn’t too clear, but it looks like it may be XX282. Can anyone confirm whether it was used by them?

Many thanks.

Simon

Ta!

Thanks for all the replies and contributions everyone – much appreciated. 🙂

My Ebay-bought slide is actually of XX262, not XX282, and must have been taken in 1980, not 1983. It’s an easy mistake to make with the serial number, having actually examined the slide in detail. Blue serial numbers on red planes aren’t the easiest thing to read!! 🙁

And the Flickr image is surely XX292 not XX282.

XX282 was with 63 sqn from 1981-1992 then to 19sqn before moving to 100 sqn

Never with the Red Arrows

I would agree that it is probably XX292

XX232 was never a Red Arrows Hawk.

The piccy that hunterxf382 posted is XX292.

XX282 mistaken for XX232??

I know XX232 was used by the Arrows around that time so maybe it’s all just a typo..?

I can add a little in that I have a couple of slides of XX282 taken in July 1986 and it was still in the markings of 63 Sqn.

Maybe not 282….

I’d have to admit, it does look like XX282 but there is a problem…. I don’t think the Red Arrows started painting ‘Royal Air Force’ on the side of their jets till at least 2005/2006. I’ll have a check and see when that was!

No copyright infringment intended here, but here’s the enhanced close-up I did briefly…. To be honest it sure looks like an 8 to me, not a 9 – which is where the confusion lies in my original post…. Beats me what’s going in with this serial number

Would your slide by any chance be this one that was on ebay?

Gets confusing when doing searches for this serial – as I found THIS on Flickr which when enhanced on m pc does show as XX282, but apparently in 2009?
According the other records at UK Serials, it was destroyed in 2000!

Yes, that’s the one. Having looked at the slide, it’s difficult to make out whether it’s 282, 262 or 292…

I did see that photo on Flickr, which seems to be XX292 rather than XX282. As you pointed out, XX282 was destroyed in 2000 in a crash in Northumberland when with 100 Sqn.

Thanks for the reply. I’d like to post a scan of the photo (it’s a slide), but it’s copyrighted, so perhaps that wouldn’t be a good idea.

I think it may be XX262, as it has a pilot’s name on the port side of the nose which looks like ‘S R Johnson’. He was the pilot who ejected from XX262 when it famously (infamously?) crashed in Brighton in 1980. That would obviously make the date on the slide mount completely wrong. There also appears to another name under his (crew chief presumably?). These shots of XX251 and XX264 taken in 1980 shows the same sort of markings:

As far as I know XX282 wasn’t a Red Arrows hawk, It was at Chivenor on 63Sqn in 1981.

XX252 which was with the Red Arrows in the early 80’s may be Hawk in the piccy. Can you post the shot?
