Empedia – a new Interactive Guide for Newark Air Museum

Newark Air Museum is the first aviation collection in the East Midlands to have a listing on Empedia; and I’m not aware of any other similar App based heritage guides in the UK

To quote from the host website “Empedia helps people enjoy and explore the East Midlands’ rich culture and heritage. This growing collection of online maps, audio tours, video and interactive guides is available for you to access and play while you are out and about, via the Empedia website or iPhone App so that you get the most out of your visit. If you run a cultural organisation, Empedia offers an effective way for you to develop guides to help your site come alive and as the Empedia Player can be embedded in your website, the guide will be very easily accessible. The Empedia Platform is being developed by Cuttlefish Multimedia and is funded by Renaissance East Midlands.”

I understand that other aviation venues may shortly be joining Empedia and I will provide details as and when they become available.

This Link takes you to the NAM entry but I would suggest that you look at the other guides that are included on the main Empedia site.

NAM’s entry includes various video and audio clips and has been structured at finding out what works best. Feedback can be provided on Empedia or via me on this thread. Sadly the Vulcan landing clip has not come out very well but the original source material wasn’t the best. There is also a bit more information on the news page of the NAM website about the one missing item; the QR codes (special bar codes) that still have to be installed at the museum!

I hope that you find Empedia of interest and I look forward to your feedback – it might be tomorrow before I am able to respond as I’m just on my way out to give a talk!

Sky High – at the moment Empedia is being 😮 ‘piloted’ in the East Midlands, but I understand that Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire may be getting involved with some of their key sites!

jr – it does open up some great opportunities and these first few pages are just really a ‘toe in the water’ to see what works best (hence the request for feedback). The Vulcan footage was extracted from some Super 8 cine film footage taken on a cold and cloudy day – not the best conditions at all; but some of the other footage is better and more interesting. What’s really good is that once loaded onto a phone it can be used as you move round the exhibits – so we don’t have the outlay of the equipment associated with normal audio trails; plus it’s a lot easier to edit!!

I had a very quick look yesterday and am hoping to have a really good study later, but the bit I did see looks fantastic, it opens up all sorts of possibilities. I hadn’t seen the footage of the Vulcan landing before and although its not the best quality as you say, its still pretty amazing, a great way of combining information.

I think it’s absolutely marvellous, Twin Otter. I misssed it yesterday for some reason and certainly would have posted a response had I seen it. I wonder how many other aviation museums know of Empedia or any other similar websites. Food for thought for a few, I would imagine, and I’m sure it will boost your attendances this year.
Thank you for bumping it.

Now I’m back from the ‘lecture circuit’ I’ll bump this one time.

I’m surprised that no one has commented on the Meteor FR9 trials footage; Shackleton ‘wedding sortie’ or the Viper audio comments!! 😮
