Information on CREAGH OSBORNE AERO COMPASS

Can anyone cast any light on this large dry compass? Bears a plate marked, CREAGH OSBORNE Patent 1148/15 17736/15 and hand stamped C.O. AERO COMPASS Patt 256 511. Any idea what this would have been used in? Regards, Simon
