I’m looking for more information on a Catalina FP-112 that crashed in Pepel Sierra Leone is was based at jui and was a aircraft from 460 squadron. I believe this has been covered before on this thread but can’t find any references.
The reason being, his brother is a friend of mine and I would like to get any more information and if any photographs exist of the base or personnel that would be great. He is listed on the Memorial in Wootton Bassett High Street
Bertram Arthur Gibbs W/op/air gunner 1312812 RAFVF
buried at King Tom Cemetery Freetown

Catalina photograph
Just an update and a thank you. David Legg of the Catalina Society has kindly sent me a back copy of May 1994 edition of ‘The Catalina News’ the 490 squadron group photograph is featured within. A very kind gesture and I will be passing onto Bryan (Bertram’s brother). It is interesting through the fog of time how little the relatives know of details behind fate of loved ones lost.
Any way I would like to extend my thanks to David for helping fill in a few blanks in a families history. Here is a picture of Bertram.

Oops my error it was 490 thanks for the links to the photos very interesting. I wonder if anyone out there has a higher resolution version of the second Jui photo with the squadron crew in front of the Catalina.
Here’s hoping – thanks again Mike
Mike – I may be able to help you with that photo but need a day or so to track it down in my collection. I’ll get back to you, probably via a PM
