Spitfire First Flight 75th Celebration Southampton

I see that a Flypast is planned to commerorate the first flight of the Spitfire 75 Years ago on the 5th of March.

The passenger on this flight will be the Australian architect Nick Hancock, the winner of the competition to design a Spitfire memorial sculpture for Southamptons water front. He was not one of the original six finalist’s, just appeared at the last minute, which has caused alot of upset among the other finalists, obviously. The decision to choose his design featured on a BBC South ‘Inside out’ programme recently.
One of the criteria for the design was that it must feature a Spitfire three times bigger than reality which obviously created severe structural design implications, and yet the chosen design is much smaller, about one and a half times bigger. The losing designers were also asked to produce further supporting design work with a deadline that was after the decision had been made, costing them time and wasted effort.
It all seems a bit underhanded to me.
