Instrument Panel Question

I am thinking of acquiring an instrument panel for an evening project. I would want an RAF type aircraft and the buying of a panel seems an easyish task. My question is, how do you know what instruments are required to fill the gaps ? Are there manuals for RAF aircraft that lists instruments by a ref number or something? Sorry if this seems a blindingly obvious question however I will be new to this and have not a clue.
