Mysterious WW II airbase in colour.

In this month’s Aeroplane mag. there is this superb wartime colour photo of a York on an unknown airbase in the Middle East.
Visible on the tarmac are the letters AKK.. Could it be Akkra (Accra)
But then again, Accra is not in the Middle East.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Lauriebe, so it’s Almaya, Cairo, it appears that even Aeroplane Monthly has forgotten the details to one of its pictures!

No, it’s MW173 “Zipper”, SEAC markings. The Australian one was MW140 “Endeavour” which was ferried out in 1945.

That looks mightly like a mosque in the background; I doubt at that period you’d find one in Australia.

I was thinking that, I don’t think that is an airfield code or name, fantastic picture mind.
