Compass Identification

Santa was very kind to me this year, he brought me an aircraft compass that I have spent lots of time trying to identify. I will attach some photos of it to help the id but I have to say that it is a very heavy unit, about 4kg even without the homemade 6mm mild steel bracket that currently supports it. This started me wondering if indeed it was aviation related, Google produced inconclusive results. One website called it an aircraft compass whilst another referred to it as out of a Sherman tank. The compass has a white anchor painted on it which I am told signifies US Navy (seems reasonable though why a US Navy compass would be fitted to a Sherman is beyond me).

So can any of the knowledgeable folk on this forum help me with an id???

Well I knew that there were some very knowledgeable folk on this forum but I am impressed with the speed of this reply. Less than one hour after posting, I had a positive id.

Many many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

It is a Pioneer 1829 and indeed is a vehicle compass. US tanks generally had the 1830, which is similar or the Sherill M6.

They were also fitted in some LVTs which probably explains the anchor.

It’s in very nice condition!
