YAM Halifax Roll-out, 1994

Hello

Wondered if anyone here could help me.

back in 1994, the Yorkshire Air Museum had a ‘roll out’ of it’s Halifax project. I say roll out but I don’t think the aircraft was actually rolled anywhere, but was up on it’s wheels for the first time I believe

At this stage, the re build was still missing the forward fusealge and other components, but consisted of, I believe, the centre and rear fuselage, inboard wings, and tail feathers.

I wondered if anyone had any pics of this? I can remember it was covered in Flypast but I no longer have a copy of the mag, or remember exactly which month it was.

I have ‘Home is the Halifax’, which had lots of photos from the 1996 roll out (when the aircraft was complete) but none from 1994.

Can anyone help?

I seem to recall a tale from when the engines were delivered, by (I believe) a French Air Force C160. While the engines were being unloaded someone was asking the pilot, ‘so, are these aircraft pressurized?’ As the pilot is about to respond, the fork truck driver accidentally stuck one of his forks through the side of the fuselage. The French pilot paused, then answered ‘well, this one WAS…’ 🙂

God…I wish!!! No, I just meant a.n.other airworthy aircraft that had Bristol Hercules engines – can’t actually think of one off the top of my head.

I remember reading in Bomber Command News (is that still going?!) at the time that they’d been gifted 4 airworthy Hercules engines by the French airforce…did YAM use these engines or were they swapped for ‘static’ ones so they could be used in an airworthy machine?

Great photo.

What were the cowlings and nacelles on the YAM Halifax made from? Wood/fibreglass or more original materials?

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh, what a sight, now if a project like that would make a Stirling as well that would be a great sight too.

I don’t know about ’94 but there was definitely a roll out in ’93. The programme is reproduced below:
