Period Christmas Card – Phantom of the Ruhr

During making Into the Wind I came across the following postcard which the veteran kindly allowed me to scan and use. Has anyone else come across any similar period postcards from Bomber Command or beyond?

scan can be found here

best wishes

Here’s one taken by my uncle around 1940/41 at Reyjavik. Before that he had been at AASF HQ Reims during the Battle of France. He was later killed in Palestine in 1942. Helping out moving a bomb on the airfield, on his days leave!

G-ASEA, that Christmas Card is of enormous interest to me. I´ll be sending you a PM!

Again not aviaton related but my grandad on the right of the photo. But he did see the Red Devil ( Red Baron) fly over the trenches in his red Albartros.

As far as I remember, we don’t have any christmas cards from my maternal grandfather’s time in France… either for his preparatory time (1917), or for 1918, when he was in a US Army hospital, being treated for gas inhalation.

We do have a number of his letters home, a few pics, and I have his metal document tube with end-caps.

Desert Air Force 1944.

No family connection. I just picked it up at the local antique book shop

This one is my favourite. It was sent to my Mother by my Grandfather from the trenches of France in 1917.

This one was saved by my father. From Christmas 1941 it is to the N.C.O.’s of 50 Squadron from Gus Walker.

At that time 50 Squadron were at Skellingthorpe. Gus Walker had been a very popular 50 Squadron CO until October 1941.

Whilst making the film we spent a fair bit of time with Ken Wallis who showed us his collection of images from over the year. One of these, a silhouetted air to air with a wellington ( piloted by Ken ), was taken for the 103 squadron christmas card. Has anyone seen an example of this in it’s christmas card format?

I havent the image on this hard drive to post i’m afraid.
