RAF Ascot

Does anyone have any information of RAF Ascot. Yes there realy was one.

There are few records and I only have a small crash report to prove that the airfield was there.

It operated around WWII and had some USAF personal flying form there.

Can anyone help please?

The “RAF Ascot” in the frequncy list is almost certainly one of the call-signs used in the RAF world-wide HF SSB radio net. Main call-sign “Architect”. Ascot standing for Air Support Command Operational Transit.

Don’t forget that HQ USAAF 9th Air Force was at Sunninghill Park. HQ USAAF IX Troop Carrier Command was at Ascot (precise location not known). Both are within a couple of miles of the finishing straight at Ascot Racecourse. Seems likely that there would have been some sort of Senior Officer’s “Air Taxi Service” operated from the Racecourse.

Not being old enough to know for sure but I was given to understand, by a local, that small American planes flew from, what is now, the race course. Something like the Cubs, could this be true?

Have a look here

That’s certainly a possibility tona, there was an airstrip at Chepstow racecourse, possibly an SLG.

The Willis & Hollis book was my source of information as well (what a useful publication, though somewhat superceded by the ‘net these days). As Ascot was the nearest railway station, the town name may have attached itself as a sort of ‘official’ unofficial name ?

I think I’m right in saying that RAF Winkfield became – post-WW2 – one of those “Radio Research Stations”, of which there were many, and some of who were mixed up with “spooks”, “Y-Service”, etc, and all that sort of stuff.
Willis & Hollis don’t list an “Ascot” – but do list a “Winkfield”.

Are you sure you’re not looking for RAF Winkfield, situated a couple of miles to the N. of Ascot town ? Open from ’41 to ’45, training ground. Have you tried the Airfield Information Exchange website ? (although it seems to be having problems at this moment in time ?).
