Help needed please – Tirpitz film

Hi all
I am trying to locate a copy of “Target Tirpitz” a 1973 documentary narrated by Ludovic Kennedy – my friend’s late father appeared in it & his VHS copy was accidentally destroyed (NOT by me!!!!), I would like to replace it for him as a surprise gift if possible.

If anyone has a copy on VHS or DVD I would of course be happy to reimburse costs – Have tried trawling the web but there is very little mention other than an IMDB listing

Many thanks

Muzzey

Cheaper still, from £1-50 for anyone wanting the book.

Soon after he worked on the documentary, Kennedy brought out a ‘profusely illustrated’ book on the subject. There is a chance what you want may also be in this book. Anyway its cheap.

roadracer – that’s exactly what I’m looking for, just can’t seem to find anyone who can sell me a copy, either VHS or DVD! – can you help? – I’m hoping there is a forumeer who has an old tape copy – I understand it was re-screened in the 80’s

many thanks

… My friend’s father appeared in the program being interviewed as navigator of one of the Lancaster’s of 617 squadron that took part in raids on the Tirpitz from a (then) allied airbase at Archangel in northern Russia. (his logbook confirms this – with the annotation for the entry: SUNK! in big red letters) – not confirmed if his aircraft scored the hit though as there were several on each raid I believe … 🙂

 The ‘Tallboy Op’ that ‘sank’ (turned over) the Tirpitz was a combined IX Squadron and 617 Squadron Op that took off from RAF Lossiemouth in the early hours of 12 November 1944 – destination the Bals Fjord, Tromsoe, Norway.

If you PM me your email address I’ll send you a published account of the Op from the perspective of a IX Squadron bomb aimer!

Thank you

A big thanks to all for your responses,

Rogier – sadly the tape was damaged beyond recovery but thanks for the useful advice, it may be very useful in the future – I have, as suggested, contacted “Yesterday” as they work closely with the BBC (original producers) and am awaiting a reply – fingers crossed!

pfP7063 – many thanks for the link, I shall follow that up – good lateral thinking!

In my old age my memory really does play tricks on me and I’m sure the late Ludovic Kennedy did a documentary about the Bismark.

That would make more sense as he was there during the pursuit of the Bismark, on HMS Tartar.

Why not try contacting the digital channel Yesterday and asking them if they know of it and whether they have any plans to screen it?

Also, VHS tapes can be repaired by dismantling the case, aralditing the the torn tape to the trailer (transparent part of the tape) so that it does not touch the heads and finding a second tape ( cut off unwanted tape) for the remaining spool and follow procedure as before. I hope that makes sense. Its fiddly and a dummy run might be a good idea.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!:)
