I believe that the late Jimmy Dell flew TSR2 (XR219) low-level over the Pennines on at least one occasion as part of the flight-test programme. Does anyone know if any photographs exist of THE aircraft roaring like hell-on-wheels through the hills. Oh hell, I’m breaking out in a sweat.

Strange how that book has disappeared. As I mentioned in my own book, Phoenix or Folly‘s text has mistakes but it was easily the best book on the subject. But it’s extremely rare to see a copy anywhere these days.

I think that’s the event that I used a representation on the front cover of TSR-2 Phoenix or Folly I produced! I’ll check through the file Jimmy gave me.

I’ve got Damien Burke’s fabulous book on the TSR2 and I guess this would be either flight 19 on 11/3/65 – “Flight envelope expansion” or flight 20 on 12/3/65 – “Low-level performance”? No phots though.
Don’t spoil it too much – I haven’t got to that part yet!
So far itβs been a very enlightening and thought provoking read!! π

Nope, I’ve never seen any spectacular low-level images. Some were taken but they don’t show the surrounding terrain, sadly. I picked the most attractive shots I could for my book but as you can see in that or pretty-much any book or magazine feature on the type, there’s only a fairly limited range of in-flight images to choose from unfortunately.

Damien’s book says Flight 16 was flown by Beamont not Dell.

I had a look at this excellent resource..

and it seems to be flight 16 from Warton but no pics on his website.
