Hi All,
Just thought i’d post this website link to introduce a new project to restore the RAF Metheringham watch office. I hope you find it interesting and support the project as a worthwhile cause.

l was stationed at RAF Hospital Nocton Hall from ’61 to ’65 which is 2.9 Miles
from Metheringham. But l never knew there was an airfield there until l joined this forum, we used to walk to the pub in the village.

Gents, The restoration project is a private venture by myself and independent of the visitor’s centre. It’s taken a lot of time, money and dedication to get this far and finally launch the project but with 55,000 reasons why the project should succeed I intend to get the tower standing proud again.

What a great project, I wish they would do something like this at Bodney.

The website quotes 106 Sqdn’s losses as being 995 killed. Bearing in mind that Bomber Command’s total losses were about 55,000 killed this is an extraordinarily high figure, almost 1/55 of the total.

I had no idea it was partly demolished! I hope they can get it back to how it would have looked.

You’ll never be able to get the Met Office looking right!! TWO mercury barometers hanging side by side on a wall not illuminated by direct sunlight!! Spare mercury-in-glass thermometers in the store cupboard!! And, if the forgoing was not enough to give the Elf & Safety lot the conniptions, then the standby, hand-held, anemometer had a luminous pointer and dial figures!!!
This may, of course, account for the fact that Met Persons from that era (and slightly after) are often slightly ’round the bend’!! Mercuric poisoning was the reason that those who worked the imported beaver skins with mercury were subsequently known to be as “mad as hatters”!!!
If we can help with matters of detail then just give us a shout!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s great news. Well you need a couple of brave and skilled people to restore that tower again. Is the tower far from the visitor centre?

Fantastic news!! As a former member of the FOMA (something i hope to be involved with once again) I am very excited that someone has taken on this project.
Are there any connections with FOMA/MAVC?

Metheringham Museum
This is great news!
I visited the small visitor centre about 3/4 years ago now and found it very interesting. After there I had a drive around the old airfield and found the concrete areas quite good!
Is this new project anything to do with the current museum?
Phil.

Another tower saved and restored is always a good thing!
