I am looking for informations concerning the old Hangar 1 built before 1940 at the Toronto Island Airport. The RNoAF used the airport till 05.42 when they finally moved to Muskoka Airport. The site was known as “Little Norway”.
Was the Hangar built by the Toronto Port Authority, the RCAF or the RNoAF?
Who was the architect?
Maybe a member from Norway has an answer….
Infos from anybody else are also very welcome 🙂
The question appeared during my research of the history of the 13 Saunders ST-27 aircraft. At least one operating airline (Air Atonabee than City Express) used this facility.

You can find a photo of the old Hangar 1 here (the dark building):

I am quite sure that the old hanger at Toronto Island was used by Austin Airways between the wars.
Definitely not built by the RNAF
We used it while filming the movie “Amelia” . A great classic aircraft hanger
I now know that the Hangar was built between 1937 and 39. I’ve got a photo dated 1938 showing the construction of Hangar 1.

Is it listed?
If so, check the local historic or preservation society.
They shouoldmhave deatils on contrruction dates and details. If it’s not protested but stilll in use, ask the airport managers.
Still done – without success!

Can’t believe that it should be such a rare subject!
Thanks in advance.
