I am trying to identify the seriel number of a fairey battle that crashed at Raf Binbrook.
All i know is it was on the 22nd October 1940 and was on local flying training when fog suddenly descended on the airfield.
Thew pilot P/O Macdonald crashed whilst approaching the airfield.
The a/c was from 142 sqn.
Reason i am trying to research this crash is i have found some parts from which i was told is a Fairey Battle .
I have one part with a part number which has the the letters PC1? in the oval plate plus today i found a exhaust stub in very good condition and im trying to definately id it as a battle plus find the number of the aircraft so i can find out more about the crash etc.
I cant find any other recollections of a battle crashing around the perimeter but if anyone knows of any planes that crashed during ww2 around perimeter which might be a possibility i would love to hear more please.
Like i said i have found a merlin stub today but dont know if there is any differences in the stub to id the type of a/c it may have come from.

Thank you paul for that . That has helped me out a huge amount to find the seriel numbers of them a/c.
Will have to try and get hold off a copy of the book as trying to trace all 12 and 142 sqn from binbrook and there history.

Carr was flying Battle L5391 , Macdonald was in P2327

Maybe other way around FIG is flown into Ground as you say on airfield

Just read my notes again and noticed the other battle lost that day flown by p/o carr force landed 5 m north so maybe it is the other one.I presume fig is flew into ground ?

I dont think it could be that one as its literally just over the boundary fence .
I am saying it is a battle but maybe it isnt?
It is defiantely a merlin engine type a/c but the part i posted up on here a couple of days ago i think comes back as battle.
I dont know of any other battles that crashed on the airfield or the boundary at this present time till i try and search more or get hold of the orb for 12 and 142 sqn
