His name was Mudd.

I would be grateful if the forum could provide me with information about a pilot from 50 & 106 Squadrons named Mudd.

From my personal research, and from the pages of Harry Moyle’s “The Hampden File” in addition to Nicolas Robert’s “Handley Page Hampden & Hereford Crash Log” I have determined that the lucky/unlucky F/Sgt. Mudd was at the controls of four Hampdens that crashed.

These aircraft were,

P4314 23/7/40. Landed heavily at Cottesmore when with 14 O.T.U.

L4120 16/12/40. With 106 Squadron this aircraft was undergoing an engine and airframe test when the port engine failed resulting in the aircraft crashing close to Finningley.

AE229 30.8.41. This 50 Squadron aircraft crashed at Bassingham when mistakenly landing on a decoy flare path.

X2919 3.9.41 Returning from operations with 50 Squadron the aircraft ran out of fuel and made a forced landing near Wittering.

I would be most thankful for any further information on this man.

Iam sorry, David, but I couldn’t resist reminding readers of the character from Star Trek, Harcourt (Harry) Fenton Mudd:

Roger C Camel, actor, portrayed a brilliantly funny character.

Best wishes,

Not yet you won’t – those units aren’t published. But give it time – I suspect there’s a few people on here eagerly awaiting the expansion of this site.
