Robertsbridge Aviation Society Museum Site

News on local BBC TV this morning that the owner of the RAS Museum site at Bush Barn on the A21 at Robertsbridge has been found murdered, apparently run over on his premises which, of course, includes the RAS buildings.

I bumped into a RAS member in the village this morning who tells me that obviously at this stage they cannot get access to the museum and have no idea what impact the tragedy might have on the longer term future of the location.

Indeed – Accordingly, this thread is now closed, but will remain viewable for the time being. Should new and relevant information come to light, I’ll be happy to re-open it.

As Junk Collector has said, there is no suggestion of any link in this tragic case to aircraft parts or the theft thereof. Speculation that there might be is idle and stupid speculation of the very worst kind at a time like this.

In mentioning another case (Andy Cresswell) I was intending to highlight a similar murder, locally, which had coincidental historic aviation connections. That is all. Nothing whatsoever of an aviation connection was taken or targeted in the case of Andy Cresswell, and neither it would appear was it the case at Robertsbridge. Stating that people who store valuable aircraft parts ought to take care is common sense – as it is with any valuable item(s). Inferring that those who store such items might now be at some risk of murder is crass stupidity.

I know the mods are rightly monitoring this although, frankly, in view of the comments by Nachtjagd etc I probably ought to simply pull and delete the thread. This is a tragic case for the family and also affects those at RAS who knew him and were his friends.

Sorry but you are way off track, where this happened, had nothing to do with, and was no where near the RAS premises, but was near his outbuildings, workshops from where he operated his business etc where no aircraft stuff was stored, I tend to believe what the Police have said, I doubt anyone is hiding the truth regarding potential theft of aircraft scrap, please get your facts right and don’t speculate, end of.

The point here is that we dont yet know for certain what has led to this tragic event.

Resmoroh, you are quite right to advise caution when storing valuable items (Me, its all bits of Vampire; hardly valuable!!), but we cannot directly link this crime with the theft of aircraft parts just yet.

Until we have hard facts, lets keep theories to a minimum please.

It is disappojnting that this and many other forums are prone to speculation posting on a wide variety of subjects. These days it is common for the media to speculate on almost any and every news event, either in advance or after the event. It adds little to the knowledge and often has a negative effect.

 What like endless conspiracy theories?

Perhaps we would all be better waiting, rather than speculating!

The media reports I’ve seen and heard seem to be linking the tragic incident to other local thefts of 4 x 4 vehicles!

Bruce,
I regret to disagree with you. Regardless of the domestic difficulties associated with this appalling event – with which I totally agree. There is, however, a necessity to noise abroad – including on the internet – the problems which may be connected with this crime! Just giving it to “the relevant authorities” is not, in my opinion, good enough. Everybody should be made aware of the possible consequences of storing potentially very valuable aircraft “bits” on their premises. I suspect that your Insurers may also be interested in what you’ve got in your garage?!!
One of the plus factors of the internet is that information can be made known to a vast audience in next to no time (whether that info is accurate is – as we’ve all discovered – up to fate!!).
“the relevant authorities” may decide just to put it in their “Pending ” tray, but if enough noise is made (including that on the internet) than that Pending Tray may not be a sufficient defence to not taking action.
Do not sweep any possible cause of this event under the carpet.
HTH

Nevertheless, this terrible incident is under investigation by the relevant authorities. Any theories should be directed to them, and not published on an internet forum please.

If Nachtjagd is who I think it is then, Tangmere1940, he does not speak “spherical playing objects” without good reason!

Nachtjagd

Not sure what your “sources” are, but aside from the (apparently) coincidental link of aircraft wreck items at both locations then as far as I know no link has been made and I would suggest that this is just idle speculation which is probably not helpful at this sad time.

According to my sources in UK there might be something going on here with an obvious connection between the two murders – aircraft wreckage, which is known to sell for big money these days. So if you keep these items in your home, garage or outbuildings etc, then you might want to review your security arrangements. Sad times we live in.

I have no personal knowledge of the museum or the individuals concerned but feel I must express my horror at what has happened and offer my condolences to the family and friends.

Just to clarify, and having read Junk Collectors post and re-read mine, I want to add that I was not in any way suggesting that the RAS site and its future was an issue that should have any prominence at this sad time. As JC says, the important thing is catching Julian’s killer(s) and concern for his family. I am sorry if my post was badly phrased in that respect but my intention in posting this information was in the context that this terrible crime has also had, and will have, an impact upon some members of the historic aviation community. I am nominally a member of the RAS, too, in order to support a local organisation and my sympathy goes out to Julian’s family and those at the RAS who were his friends.

Sadly, a similar murder with historic aviation connections took place not many miles away and only about 18months ago with the murder of Headcorn/Lashenden’s Andy Cresswell, a personal friend of mine, who was killed when disturbing a robbery. His killers have never been caught although I believe three were arrested and bailed. Lets hope and pray that Julian’s murderer(s) is/are brought to justice swiftly.

As a former member of RAS i am horrified to read of Julian Gardners murder and extend condolences to his family particularly his 90 year old mother. Without the support and help of the Gardners over the years RAS simply would never had existed. Much thanks is owed to people like this for their quiet contribution. At this stage speculation over the future of RAS is best left the murder and tragic loss of someone is far more important
