Nottinghamshire Airstrips

I’m helping to cross reference some airfields / landing sites in Nottinghamshire and I would appreciate any feedback on the following locations:

Cromwell
Grassthorpe Grange
Staddon Heights

The first two may just be microlight sites but Staddon Heights may have World War I connections and some sites tag it as being in Devon, whilst maps indicate West Notts near Underwood.

I’m also posting this request in the GA section with an additional question that asks whether the Thurgarton and Oxton airstrips are one and the same or separate (albeit close) sites.

Any input would be appreciated.

That’s part of the dilemma Doug; especially with Staddon Heights. When I try to cross reference it another site gives the location as being in Devon yet displays a map of the Bagthorpe / Underwood area of Nottinghamshire.

I’m fairly happy with Cromwell and Grassthorpe Grange sites as they are listed on some Air Navigation sites, but more information would be appreciated.

Similar question about Oxton / Thurgarton. 🙂

Thanks for the information John! 🙂

There have been Microlights operating out of a strip to the NW side of Oxton at Salterford and there is the strip above Thurgarton to the East of Oxton. Other strips in the area are the Lambley site and a single Cherokee operated out of a private strip at Leapool roundabout some years ago. Just above Ravenshead at Tabletop Tree is the old Tommy Shipside strip where he kept his Messenger, Gemini and I believe an Auster.

Thanks again.

I’ll try to ask about this in another way; does anyone know of any alleged World War I activity in the Bagthorpe / Underwood area of Nottinghamshire – south of the A608, west of the M1 and close to junction 27?

The whole area is steeped in military activity -there are two forts and the Wall in the immediate vicinity. The only aeronautical activity I know of was the use of the area as a barrage ballloon site in WW2…

There is some info (if a little fanciful) http://www.cyber-heritage.co.uk/thewall/wall.htm

Thanks for that confirmation – still perplexed about the incorrect map on one of the cross reference checks!

Did Staddon Heights in Devon have any alleged World War I activity?

Just for elimination -there is a Staddon Heights in Devon- it is near Plymouth at approx N50:20:39 W4:06:59. There is a private helipad but no airstrip AFAIK.
