Plate Identity

Hi! Can anyone identify his brass plate (appears engine related)? Was told that it was dug in France, and relates to an early war British WW2 airplane. Marked: “FIRING ORDER”, “A UNIT -“. “B UNIT -” with numerals 1 through 6 (out of sequence) on each line and interconnecting arrows between. Thank you, Steve

Possibly a Hurricane I or Spitfire I, although a Defiant or Fairey Battle are other possibles.

That is terrific help – thanks to all (and hi there Andy). OK, a bit (no pun intended) more . . . the gent who brought this to my attention said that it was found in the vicinity of Dunkirk. So obvious questions become what type of a/c used those types of early Merlins, and were any lost in that area at the time such engines were in use. Hope I asked that right. Best regards, Steve

Steve

Certainly a RR Merlin engine firing-order plate. (ie the firing order of cylinders) This is found on the port side of early mark Merlins together with the Patents plate and Manufacturers (Rolls Royce) plate with engine numbers etc.

These plates are also to be found on early Merlins (III and X?)
