The museum where I volunteer has acquired aircraft c/n 2171. The data plate shows a date of manufacture as 5 Feb 1970. The helicopter was registered JA7539 but nothing else of its history is known until it arrived in Australia in the nineties. Can anyone assist please?

I am advised that this aircraft was delivered new to All Nippon Airways in Feb 1970 as JA7539. It was withdrawn from use in April 1990 and subsequently exported to Australia. Does anyone know what ANA used it for in the intervening 20 years? Does anyone have a photo of a KH4 in ANA colours?

Thanks everyone who responded. Unfortunately we are no closer to discovering its early history.

It seems the only place where they’re used a great deal outside of Japan is Australia (and Thailand which apparently had military KH-4s).
Are they commercially licensable in Australia?
I don’t think they are here, at least I’ve never seen or heard of one in North America.
Six KH4s have operated in New Zealand over the years, apparently mostly in agricultural work.

As a Bell 47 fan (and very occasional pilot) I’d like to see more about the Kawasaki Bells. As a child growing up in Japan, I recall seeing a large department store in Tokyo with a fun fair on the roof…along with a helipad with several 47 variants.

Try here http://www.bell47helicopterassociation.org/
Btw, according Rotorspot.nl the specific helicopter was only in JA & VH register (Kawasaki-Bell 47G-3B.KH4 ; c/n2171 ; JA7539,VH-AHQ)
… and a small image of the JA7539 at the http://www.geocities.jp/rikichan55/ja7500.html 🙂
