"Gem" or "GEM" mods; what were they?

Looking through the 1944 (usually) Spitfire records, there are incessant references to “Gem mods,” often at A.T.S. Does anyone know what they entailed, please? I don’t believe they were “C” to “E” wing mods, because they had their own specific modification numbers.
