Documentary … "The WatchTower"

BlueNoser352 is curious & seeking a little more info on what this documentary is about? Any info would be welcomed!

Thanks

THE WATCHTOWER Documentary ?
Caranis:

You peaked my interest with your reference to a documentary made in the 1980’s called ” The Watchtower”. What was this documentary about? Sounds like it could be about wartime control towers …..Enlighten us here with more ..Much thanks from BlueNoser352!

I have spoken to Harold and Fred Panton at East Kirkby and believe what they say about the airfield being haunted is correct. Especially the sighting of the American airman with the parachute. I have the number of the B17 that crashed there in 1944, but have never been able to find a crew list. The late Squadron Leader Jack Currie frequented the airfield when he made the documentary “The Watchtower” during the late 1980’s. Fred told me Jack wanted to fly Just Jane. If he could have got away with it ,,,, I think he would have. He was a real gentleman.

Nice to see this come back around again !

Hey thanks from across the big pond on bringing this up…sounds like a good topic for a documentary . Wartime ghost stories & old WW II bases. Felt that way several times myself on a cold grey day once at Bodney as I looked around the old control tower where the 352nd FG once owned the place!

Thanks for sharing….. BlueNoser352 !

There was also a drama called “Cries from a Watchtower,” a Play For Today, which was screened in 1979. But I don’t think it was aircraft related.

I can remember trying to hide when uniformed ladies came into a pub selling a magazine called “The Watchtower”
http://www.watchtower.org/
Look and run

Are you sure it wasn’t War Cry, Peter?

That was usually sold by uniformed ladies of the Salvation Army.

It is an “interesting” documentary, and worth watching with some colour wartime footage.

It is mainly set around East Kirkby, with some ghost stories and an interview with one of the Pantons interviewed.

The watchtower is published by the JWs. I don’t think they wear uniforms. But then I do not frequent pubs enough to say catagorically so they might do.

The only uniformed girls in pubs that I have heard of would be Salvation Army girls.

Customer in pub to Salvation army member “is that right you save fallen women?”
“yes”
“Then save me a couple.”
Its Goodnight from me……

Regardless of the proper terminology, the Jack Currie programme was indeed called ‘The Watch Tower’, as I have a copy.

Hi Bluenose, it’s either a Watch Office, or Control Tower, not a Watch Tower.
Watch Office was the proper AM name given to the military flying control building and was used right into the 1950s, when these became taller to deal with longer runways and more complex movements they became control towers.
The civil use of ‘control tower’ seems to go back alot further.

Peter Varneys’ post made me laugh, as I had to beat the ******s (not uniformed ladies these days!) away from my door yesterday morning!
