Francis K Mason

I have just taken a telephone call telling me that author Frank Mason died on 31 August 2010.

He will be especially remembered for his book “Battle Over Britain”, then a ground-breaking tome on the Battle of Britain.

My copy of Harrier is one of the, if not the most informative books on the subject and is heavily thumbed.

For me, Battle over Britain and then the Battle of Britain film sparked my life-long passion. But it was the book that really held my fascination.

I can still recall pestering my local bookshop for days, if not weeks, to see if Battle over Britain had yet arrived. I think it was 25shillings if memory serves me correctly.

Condolences to Charles and the family.

My copy of his book on the Avro Lancaster is probably one of the most read books I have. Sad to hear that he’s gone.

I was asked to relay the following from Frank Mason’s son;

——————————–
Thank you for your comments. Frank was above all a fanatical airman, who once he was unable to carry on flying, devoted the rest of his working life to writing about aircraft. We reckon that excluding part publications dad wrote/edited etc. some 80 books, some epitaph!

Kind regards
Charles Mason
