I have just seen a copy of a cartoon which appeared in Punch on 26 Jul 40. Two obviously very rich (and well padded) cigar smoking gentlemen are teeing up at the start of a round at the local course (very rich because their clubs are being carried by uniformed chauffeurs!).
One says to the other “All right then – loser pays for a Spitfire”. Summer 1940 was not a fun time – but the Brits can find humour even in adversity!!
